JAIS Encroached Christians, or Christians Encroached ISLAM?
Those behind the Roman Catholics, including certain BN component parties are of the general view that a Muslim religious department like Jab. Agama Islam Selangor(JAIS) should not have interfered into religious affairs of non-Muslims, including the Christians.
Unless and until, those supporting the Christians in in the Bible Society Raid issue, fully understand the CORE ISSUE that had sparked the anger of Muslims, except those subservient to DAP, it will be very difficult to bring the issue to a peaceful conclusion.
First and foremost, those supporting the Christians should realize that the Muslims are at loggerhead ONLY with the Christians, and not with adherents of other religions in the country. Muslims have no problem with the Hindus. Muslims have no problem with the Buddhists. Muslims have no problem with the Sikhs. In fact, Muslims in the Malay Peninsula, or Semenanjung Tanah Melayu part of Malaysia did not have any problem with the Christians too, UNTIL very recent past. Until very recent past, the Christians DID NOT use the term ‘ALLAH’ to replace the term ‘God’, when translating the English-version bibles. Until very recent past, the Christians had been using the term ‘Tuhan’, instead of ‘Allah’ for ‘God’.
The main argument for the Christians in Malaysia is that, if the Christians in Indonesia, Sabah and Sarawak, are allowed to use Bahasa Indonesia version of bible which use the term ‘Allah’ for ‘God’, then why the Islamic religious authorities in Malaysia are stopping them from doing so?
The ANSWER is simple. The Muslims in Semenanjung Tanah Melayu have NO POWER to stop the Christians from using term ‘Allah’ in Indonesia, since Indonesia is another sovereign country. Whilst in the case of Sabah and Sarawak, the Federal Government is bound by certain Agreements with the two states when Malaysia was formed in 1963. That explains, WHY, the Muslims in Semenanjung Tanah Melayu, NEVER question the use of term ‘Allah’ by the Christians in Sabah and Sarawak.
Its totally different for Semenanjung Tanah Melayu. The Muslims in Semenanjung Tanah Melayu are of the conviction that, apart from Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia was formed based on certain agreements, popularly known as the ‘Social Contract’, between the Malays/Raja-raja Melayu on one part, and the early Chinese and Indian immigrants, who were later granted citizenship of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, on another part. The ‘Social Contract’ was embodied in the Federal Constitution, which among others accord certain ‘special position’ to the Malays, including their language Bahasa Melayu, and their religion Islam.
The Muslims in Semenanjung Tanah Melayu are of firm belief that the name of Christian ‘God’ is NOT Allah, based on the earliest bibles which were written in Aramaic, Hebrew, Latin, Greek and English languages. Those bibles do not use the term ‘Allah’ to describe a Christian ‘God’. Greek bible use the term ‘YHWH’ or ‘Yehovah’, while European languages use the term ‘God’. The fact that Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia bibles use the term ‘Allah’ for ‘God’ can not erase the fact that bibles in Aramaic, Hebrew, Greek, Latin and English NEVER use the term ‘Allah’. These facts were highlighted by the Malaysian Appeal court, when making an observation that the term ‘Allah’ is NOT CENTRAL to the Christian beliefs.
To the Muslims in Semenanjung Tanah Melayu, by attempting to use the term ‘Allah’ in the Malay-version bibles AFTER over 50 years of the country’s independence, the Christians are seen to have ENCROACHED into the ‘sanctity’ of ALLAH, the ONE GOD. Infact, to the Muslims, to associate Allah with the Christian beliefs in TRINITY GOD, is an act of SHIRK, a MAJOR SIN of putting the ONE ALMIGHTY GOD at par with His ‘creations’, including Jesus, or Isa, whom the Muslims believe to be one of the great Messengers of Allah among mankind.
The Muslims believe that Christians have the option of using the term ‘Tuhan’, which is the Bahasa Melayu translation of the term ‘God’ in English, to resolve the ‘conflict’. After all, bibles in languages earlier than Arabic and Bahasa Indonesia, NEVER use the term ‘Allah’. Does it make the Hebrew-speaking, Greek-speaking, Latin-speaking, Roman-speaking, and English-speaking Christians LESS CHRISTIAN than the Christians in Malaysia, when their bibles do not use the term ‘Allah’?
So, WHO have encroached into WHOM? Have JAIS encroached into Christians, or have the Christians encroached into the Muslims in Semenanjung Tanah Melayu?
