I Lost Respect in Tun Mahathir
Tun Dr Mahathir is one of the most well-versed in the history of the country, the Malays and UMNO. Tun knew well, how the late Datuk Onn Jaafar, the first President of UMNO, ended up being an opposition leader when UMNO came to power.
Tun Dr Mahathir remembers very well how he sacked Anwar Ibrahim, then his deputy Prime Minister. I was then an ardent admirer of Anwar Ibrahim, besides being ardent admirer of Tun Dr Mahathir himself. However, when Anwar Ibrahim indulged in acts that would undermine the power of the Malays, as a means to remain relevant in Malaysian politics, I lost respect in him.
Now, I feel exactly the same towards Tun Dr Mahathir. As a statesman, I’m very sure that he could think of so many better ways to convey his feelings and opinion. As a 90-year old man, he must have come across thousand of times the old Malay saying: ‘Bagai menarik rambut dalam tepung, rambut tidak putus, tepung tidak berselerak’.
Before Tun Dr Mahathir question the wealth of DS Najib’s step son, Tun should be transparent enough to tell all the rakyat Malaysia, how did his son Datuk Mokhzani started his business…that now he has become TOP 20 RICHEST PERSONS in Malaysia.
Some how or rather, I think DS Najib has been very prudent in managing the ATTACKS by Tun Mahathir. In fact, at one time, I thought DS Najib was too generous to elevate Tun Mahathir’s son, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, as the Menteri Besar of Kedah, despite so many other more seasoned UMNO leaders.
As a seasoned political observer myself, I could feel that Tun Mahathir was ‘deeply hurt inside’, when DS Najib did not give full support to Datuk Mukhriz, when he contested for one of the three posts of UMNO Vice-Presidents. If it was really so, I really hope that this is not one of the factors behind Tun Mahathir unreserved attacks on DS Najib.
Tun Dr Mahathir has done wonders for our country…that…until recently…he had been my ICON. But, since all these thoughtless barrage of attacks against the standing President of UMNO…I’d lost all my respect in him. Sorry Tun.
