Controversies following the demise of Comrade Chin Peng rage on. The Nation is divided whether to allow his body/ashes to be allowed to be buried in his birth-place, Sitiawan in Perak. Even MCA, the second largest partner in the ruling BN, officially questioned the Government’s decision not to allow late Chin Peng’s body/ashes to be buried in Malaysia.
The DIVIDE in opinions obviously stems from the DIVIDE in the rakyat’s PERCEPTION, whether late Chin Peng was a FIGHTER FOR INDEPENDENCE OF TANAH MELAYU from the British, or he was a mere OPPORTUNISTIC CHINESE LEADER WHO ATTEMPTED TO GRAB POWER FOR THE CHINESE from the Malays.
Both sides of the DIVIDE can offer 1001 arguments to support their stand-points. However, generally, the DIVIDE is along RACIAL LINE, with the majority of the Malays oppose any idea of allowing Chin Peng’s body/ashes be buried in his birthplace, while the Chinese are believed to be unanimously accomodative, some even demanding, that Chin’s Peng’s body/ashes be allowed into the country.
I think I’m IN POSSESSION of a simple ACID TEST, to determine whether Chin Peng was a GENUINE FREEDOM FIGHTER against the British OR NOT. The ‘acid test’ is nothing other than the TIMING, WHEN Parti Komunis Malaya(PKM) led by Chin Peng started the ARMED INSURRECTION against Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
Parti Komunis Malaya(PKM), or Malayan Communist Party(MCP) was formed in 1928, as a BRANCH of the Communist Party of China. Most of the members and supporters of MCP were Chinese IMMIGRANTS who immigrated into Tanah Melayu states at a time when the British had managed to turn Tanah Melayu states into their PROTECTORATES by virtue of their respective agreements with the Malay rulers of the Tanah Melayu states.
Unlike certain Malay leaders who fought the British, like Tok Janggut of Kelantan, Dato’ Maharaja Lela of Perak, Mat Kilau in Pahang, Penghulu Naning in Negri Sembilan and many others, THERE WERE NO RECORD of any Chinese immigrant leaders who fought the British, for a period of 20 years, from the time MCP was formed in 1928, and the start of the Chin Peng-led ARMED INSURRECTION against Persekutuan Tanah Melayu in 1948. Meaning for a period of 20 years(1928-1948), the Chinese immigrants were not involved in any ARMED REBELLION against the British. Infact they were busy opening up new tin mines, and generated new businesses with the British.
This explained the reason WHY, when the Japanese attacked/occupied Tanah Melayu states and the rest of Southeast Asia in 1942, CPM could easily take the side of the British. Besides that, as we all know by now, China, the HOMELAND of the Chinese immigrants had been involved in Cino-Japanese wars for decades prior to Japanese attack of Tanah Melayu. And for a period of TWO WEEKS after the Japanese surrender to the Allied Forces in 1945, and the impending return of British Forces to Tanah Melayu, the CPM with their ‘Bintang Tiga’ military caps had taken over major and smaller towns in Tanah Melayu, and IMPOSED THEIR RULE over the town, including establishing ‘courts’ to justify their ‘revenge killings’.
When the British arrived back, and imposed the MALAYAN UNION which stripped the Malay rulers of their EXECUTIVE POWERS, and would have allowed ALL IMMIGRANTS to be CITIZENS OF TANAH MELAYU, only the Malays were opposed to it. The MCP, like most of the Chinese immigrants then were SUPPORTIVE OF MALAYAN UNION. To them, the new MALAYAN UNION would put them on equal footing with the INDIGENOUS MALAYS, and with their economic strength and numbers then, they would be able to GRAB the Tanah Melayu from the Malays and their kings once the British left for good.
The Malays, united under UMNO, managed to force the British to RESCIND the Malayan Union, not by FORCE OF ARMS, but mainly by political manouvres and negotiations.UMNO leaders lobbied formers British administrators in Tanah Melayu to be on their side. The former British administrators managed to convince the then British Government in United Kingdom that, when the British first arrived on the shores of Tanah Melayu, they only dealt with the Malay rulers and their Malay subjects, not the immigrant races. So they argued that, an independent Tanah Melayu should be handed back to the Malays and their kings.
The British RESCINDED the Malayan Union in 1948, and replaced it with Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, under the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu Agreement 1948 between the British and UMNO/Raja Melayu. Under the Agreement, Persekutuan Tanah Melayu was a TRANSITION GOVERNMENT prior to getting the FULL INDEPENDENCE within certain agreed time-scale. It was during this TRANSITION PERIOD that the British persuaded UMNO/Malay rulers to agree on certain arrangement to allow over a million Chinese and Indian immigrants to become NATURALISED CITIZENS of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, under what is now popularly known as SOCIAL CONTRACT between the MALAYS and the IMMIGRANT RACES then.
IT WAS THE FORMATION OF PERSEKUTUAN TANAH MELAYU, a transitional Government on the road to FULL INDEPENDENCE, to be handed over to UMNO/Malay Rulers, ON MALAY TERMS, which sparked off the ARMED INSURRECTION by the Malayan Communist Party(MCP) led by late Chin Peng in 1948, against the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
The ACID TEST QUESTION is, WHY the MCP took up arms against Persekutuan Tanah Melayu in 1948, when Persekutuan Tanah Melayu was on the verge of getting full independence from the British???? Why not before…???
After this little journey back into the not so distant past, I believe those who join me in the journey, will be thoroughly convinced that CHIN PENG WAS NOT A FREEDOM FIGHTER, but he was AN OPPORTUNISTIC CHINESE LEADER WHO ATTEMPTED TO GRAB POWER FOR THE CHINESE from the Malays and their kings.
