Melayu Pendatang?

October 21, 2014

First and foremost, let me state that all Malaysians, regardless of race, are bona fide citizens of this country Malaysia….and they should not be called ‘pendatang’, a Malay term for ‘immigrant’.

However, its historical fact that the forefathers of certain section of Malaysian citizens of today were ‘pendatang’ or ‘immigrants’ to the lands of Tanah Melayu, before they were accepted as citizens of the then Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.

Once the former immigrants became citizens of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, they were NO LONGER ‘pendatang’ or ‘immigrants’. Subsequently, their descendents became automatic citizens of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, and later, Malaysia.

It is very insensitive, provocative and seditious to call our fellow citizens of the country as ‘pendatang’, even in cases whereby their forefathers were ‘pendatang’ or ‘immigrants’. We fully understand the feelings of our fellow citizens when they are labelled as ‘pendatang’.

Its interesting to note that this ‘pendatang’ labellings DID NOT surface in our political stage for a period of over 50 years after the independence of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. In fact, its quite a recent problem, beginning to surface in the run up to the 2008 General Election. Perhaps Anwar Ibrahim and Lim Kit Siang are fully aware as to the reasons behind the ‘re-surgence’ of highly-charged racial politics  in the country.

I do not believe any Malay in their right frame of mind would call his fellow citizens as ‘pendatang’. However, there is every possibility that the term ‘pendatang’ was used to refer to their forefathers, who were ‘pendatang’ or ‘immigrants’ to the Persekutuan Tanah Melayu during the British era.

However, by trying to ‘hit back’ by labelling the Malays as ‘pendatang’ too, will not solve the problem. Malays were part one of the natives of this country we used to call Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. Earlier Malays, or the Proto-Malays, were one of the ORANG ASLI tribes of the country.

However, unlike the other ORANG ASLI tribes, who lived normadic life in the high lands of the country, the Proto-Malay ORANG ASLI tribes lived closer to river mouths and the sea…hence their interactions with foreigners and their much more modern status compared to the other tribes of ORANG ASLI. We can safely say that the Malays are the MODERNISED ORANG ASLI of Tanah Melayu, Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, and Malaysia.

No doubt there were certain ‘suku kaum’ of Malays sailed over to Tanah Melayu from neighbouring insular Malay Archipelago…including Sulawesi(Bugis), Java and Sumatra. However, lets not deny the fact that most Malays are decendents of the Kedah Malays, Perak Malays, Kelantan Malays, Trengganu Malays, Pahang Malays, Selangor Malays, Johor Malays, Melaka Malays and Negri Sembilan Malays, who were the NATIVES of those Tanah Melayu states.

I believe this ‘pendatang’ issue should not have re-surfaced, had all sides respect and adhere to the spirit of the CITIZENSHIP AGREEMENT, which are more commonly known as the SOCIAL CONTRACT, agreed upon by all major races in Persekutuan Tanah Melayu a few years before the country’s independence.

CITIZENSHIP AGREEMENT or the SOCIAL CONTRACT allows certain ‘SPECIAL POSITION’ of native races and tribes. It so happend that Malays were the MOST DOMINANT among the native races and tribes. And the ‘special position’ was embodied and CASTED in our Federal Constitution.

If our fellow Malaysian citizens who are descendents of their ‘former immigrants’ forefathers STOP their attempts to put aside or to do away with the CITIZENSHIP AGREEMENT or the SOCIAL CONTRACT, I’m very sure, the native Malays have no reason whatsoever to re-kindle the ‘pendatang-related’ issues.

Cadangan Penggabungan Parti-Parti BN, Cadangan TERAMAT BODOH

May 26, 2013

Berfikir dulu sebelum membuka mulut.

September 2, 2012

Chinese Only Enjoy Freedom of Expression in Malaysia, NOT in Their Motherland

September 2, 2012

Today, the Mingguan Malaysia front-paged two photos of a CHINESE-LOOKING ELDERLY LADY(to be read as  WHORE) and a CHINESE-LOOKING YOUNG GIRL(to be read as CHINA-DOLL) ‘showing their guts’ by stepping on the photo of DS Najib, the country’s Prime Minister, the  Chairman of the ruling Barisan Nasional(BN), and the President of United Malays National Organisation(UMNO), the largest Malay-based party, during the ‘Janji Bersih Rally’ at Dataran Merdeka shortly before mid-night on the 55th Merdeka Day eve.

The first thought that triggered my mind was, what would happen if the following day, a group Malay youths started to urinate onto the photos of non-Malay leaders like Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng and Karpal Singh….and get it videoed and posted all over the blogs? My mind could not stop wondering if such incidences were the sparks that triggered tragic incidences like the 13th May 1969 racial riots. Is that what certain section of our society looking for…turning a country which was listed as TOP 20 LARGEST TRADING NATION ON EARTH, where the multi-racial society had been enjoying at least 50 years of PEACE, STABILITY and PROSPERITY, into Somalia-like, Syria-like, Iraq-like and Afghanistan-like COMBAT ZONES????

The fact that DS Najib is the President of the LARGEST Malay-based political party in the country, its not difficult to interprete that such despicable acts were not directed towards DS Najibs in his personal capacity, but it was infact directed towards the United Malays National Organisation(UMNO) and even the MALAYS AS A WHOLE. Stepping on DS Najib’s photo simply symbolised STEPPING ON THE FACES OF ALL MALAYS, or at least the MAJORITY OF MALAYS. It simply showed DEEP HATRED harboured in the hearts and minds of certain section of Malaysian Chinese against their fellow Malaysians, the Malays. The fact that overwhelming majority of Malaysian Chinese voters were with the opposition in the March 2008 General Election, its very possible that the acts by the two CHINESE IDIOTS represent the ‘honest feelings’ of the overwhelming majority of Malaysian Chinese community in the country.

Its not difficult to understand WHY the Chinese harbour so much GRUDGE and HATRED towards the Malays. I believe Lim Kit Siang and Lim Guan Eng know the answer very well, as since the inception of DAP, the Malaysian Chinese community have been bombarded with the tales that the Malaysian Chinese have been discriminated by the Malays in the country, and that all wealth and opportunities in the country were ‘robbed’ by the Malays via UMNO….and only bones were left to be shared among the Chinese. The DAP propaganda machine must have been ‘very efficient’ that they managed to instill those grudges and hatred against the Malays and UMNO, despite the fact that 80% of TOP 100 RICHEST PERSONS IN MALAYSIA ARE CHINESE. Those who really know the facts would be scratching their heads, wondering, how could a DISCRIMINATED RACE be the RICHEST in the country.

To remain relevant in Malaysian politics, pro-BN Chinese-based parties like MCA and Gerakan should not be seen to be condoning such despicable acts. Its time for them to step forward to re-educate their community of the history of this country, the SOCIAL CONTRACT among the races and other ‘foundations’ of the country as laid out by our fore-fathers. They  Chinese community should not harbour GRUDGES and HATRED against the Malays for certain policies linked to the SOCIAL CONTRACT among major races, the terms of which have become part and parcel of the Federal Constitution of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, and later Malaysia. Like any other contracts, both parties must adhere to the terms and conditions of a contract. Instead of turning this country into WAR ZONES, those who can no longer respect the ‘Terms and Conditions’ of the SOCIAL CONTRACT should seriously consider GOING BACK to their respective motherlands, or the lands of their fore-fathers.

Meanwhile, as commented by Awang Selamat in Mingguan Malaysia today, our Kementerian Dalam Negeri should not allow such despicable acts like stepping on photos of our beloved leaders to pass by UNPUNISHED. In countries like China, such acts against Communist Party leaders would have been dealt with severely…that the offenders would be banished to other countries if they are lucky…but if they are not that lucky, they may not be able to see the day and night again.

Note: For the benefits of Bahasa Melayu only readers, a Bahasa Melayu translation of the above posting will follow soon.

UMNO’s Glorious 66th Birthday

May 12, 2012

United Malays National Organisation(UMNO) was formed by 43 Malay NGOs 66 years ago, as a ‘vehicle’  for the Malays to oppose the MALAYAN UNION, which would have robbed them of their TRADITIONAL RIGHTS as the original inhabitants and rulers of Tanah Melayu. The MALAYAN UNION was imposed by the then British Administration shortly after the Bristish re-occupied Tanah Melayu following the Japanese surrender. Bitter opposition by the Malays, united under UMNO, forced the British to rescind the Malayan Union, to be  replaced by PERSEKUTUAN TANAH MELAYU, in English the Federation of Malaya in 1948.

Under the Federation of Malaya Agreement agreed upon between the British and UMNO/Raja-Raja Melayu, Persekutuan Tanah Melayu was established as a TRANSITIONAL GOVERNMENT on the road to full independence from the British administration.  Along the road, UMNO formed the Alliance Party with the Malayan Chinese Association(MCA), which at later stage accepted the Malayan Indian Congress(MIC) as its third partner. Persekutuan Tanah Melayu gained the full independence from the British in 1957.

The success of UMNO-led Alliance Party in administering the independent Persekutuan Tanah Melayu, despite the EMERGENCY YEARS(1948-1960) due to armed insurgency by the Malayan Communist Party(MCP),  had led to the formation of Malaysia, by a process of merger of eleven states in Persekutuan Tanah Melayu with British colonies of Singapore , Sabah and Sarawak in 1963. However, Singapore was expelled from Malaysia two years later.

After the emergency, Malaya, and later Malaysia, enjoyed decades of peace, stability and ever increasing prosperity, except for a brief period following the May 1969 General Election, when the opposition parties-led led ‘victory parade’ along the main streets of Kuala Lumpur was misused to shout out and display abusive, deregotary and provocative slogans against the Malays. On 13th May, on the day UMNO also held their own ‘victory parade’, the highly-charged racial sentiments went out of control, and ‘hell broke loose’ into the so-called ’13th May Tragedy’.  State of Emergency’ was declared and Parliment suspended. The country was then put under the National Action Council, the MAGERAN.

MAGERAN ruled the country until the General Election was called in 1974. The period between the 13th May Tragedy and the 1974 GE, was for the country’s leaders to reflect upon the socio-economic-political enveloping the country, which led to the worst racial riots the country had ever seen. Those ‘brain-stormings’ and ‘reflections’ resulted into the introduction of a policy which was believe would help maintain the peace and stability of the country in the long-term. The policy was called ‘New Economic Policy'(NEP) with two-pronged objectives of ERADICATING POVERTY and RESTRUCTURING THE SOCIETY.

Whilst the policy of ERADICATING POVERTY would be applied across the races, RESTRUCTURING THE SOCIETY was meant to break the then ongoing identification of races with certain economic field of activity. Children of Malay farmers should not only be confined to farming, and the children of Indian rubber estate workers should not necessarily grow up to be rubber tappers. Besides that, the policy also targeted the increase of Malays/bumiputra equity in the ‘National Wealth’ from 2.5% in 1970, to at least 30% 20 years later, in 1990.

Besides being the ‘master-mind’ behind the NEP which has proven to be one of the most effective instruments in the  SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION of the Malays/bumiputras, UMNO and its partners in the Alliance Party also initiated the formation of a bigger coalition of political parties, the BARISAN NASIONAL(BN).  Founder members of BN included UMNO, MCA, MIC, Gerakan, PAS, PPP, and all major political parties in Sabah and Sarawak. The formation of the coalition was meant to reduce ‘politickings’ among the parties, which would allow more time for leaders of the parties to focus on socio-economic development of the society, including the implementation of the NEP. The only notable opposition party which did not join the coalition was the DAP.

Since then, UMNO had undergone various tests and tribulations ‘visiting’ the party and the country. We can only be full of praise and admiration in the wisdom in successive UMNO leaders in managing all those tests and tribulations. So much so, UMNO through the Alliance Party, and later the BN, have won all General Elections in the country, from the first in 1954 to the 12th in 2008. Now, UMNO is under the Presidency of DS Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, the 6th Prime Minister of Malaysia. Under his premiership, Malaysia has reached NEW HEIGHTS internationally. Malaysia is now one of the TOP 20 BIGGEST TRADING NATIONS in the world, and the Petronas Twin-Towers, the most imposing structures punctuating the skyline of Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital city, used to be the tallest building in the world in for nearly a decade from the mid-1990s…and still the TALLEST TWIN TOWERS IN THE WORLD until today.

Congratulation to United Malays National Organisation(UMNO), for their role in SHAPING THE HISTORY of  Persekutuan Tanah Melayu and Malaysia, PROTECTING THE RIGHTS OF MALAYS/BUMIPUTRAS AND ALL MALAYSIANS and ENSURING PEACE, STABILITY AND PROSPERITY for all Malaysians to enjoy, live on and inherit to their  future generations.

Again, congratulation to UMNO on their GLORIOUS BIRTHDAY.

Multi-racial Party or Multi-racial Coalition?

September 27, 2010

Datuk Onn Jaafar, was and is, a Malay ICON. He was instrumental in gathering over 40 Malay NGOs from all over Tanah Melayu, literally means ‘Malay Lands’ , in 1946 to mobilise the Malay masses in REJECTING the ‘Malayan Union’. A new Malay political party by the name United Malays National Organisation(UMNO) was formed as a vehicle to unite the Malays in opposing the Malayan Union.

Malays, united under UMNO and Datuk Onn Jaafar, succeeded in forcing the British to  rescind the Malayan Union. UMNO was CELEBRATED by the Malays, and Datuk Onn was regarded as the ‘saviour’ and ‘unchallenged’ political leader of the Malays. Yet, when Datuk Onn, influenced by the British, proposed to open up the membership of UMNO to non-Malays in 1951, he received COLD SHOULDERS from the Malays.

After leaving UMNO, Datuk Onn formed a Malay-centred multi-racial party called Independent Malaya Party(IMP), and then multi-racial Parti Negara(PN), but did not achieve much inroad into the politics of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. Overwhelming majority of Malays supported UMNO, while the Chinese were comfortable with Chinese-based MCA, and the Indians with Indian-based MIC. Yet, the three parties later on form a multi-racial coalition called the ALLIANCE PARTY to secure a 51/52 majority in the FIRST GENERAL ELECTION in 1954.

Since then, several ‘multi-racial’ parties were formed, including DAP, Gerakan and PPP. The parties managed to survive up to TODAY, as the parties are NOT MULTI-RACIAL in the true sense of the word. DAP has been identified more as a CHINESE PARTY and so is Gerakan. And, PPP has been identified as an INDIAN PARTY.

The latest ‘multi-racial’ party, PKR,  was formed in 1999, following the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim from his post as Deputy Prime Minister and from UMNO, to provide political platform to his REFORMASI supporters. Anwar conceived PKR as a Malay-centred multi-racial party, in the same way DAP is as a Chinese-centred multi-racial party. However, PKR failed to attract substantial number of Malays, but managed to attract substantial number of Indians disgruntled with MIC, and English-educated Chinese.

As things developed, PKR has developed into possibly the first TRUE MULTI-RACIAL PARTY in the country, with the membership mix almost balanced among Malays, Chinese and Indians. Even Anwar Ibrahim is seen NOT CAPABLE to maintain the ‘Malay-centredness’ he seeked to maintain.

The COMMOTIONS ATMOSPHERE which marred the PKR Cabang elections of the last few days is serving us a CAUTION, whether to experiment with ‘Multi-racial Party’, or to continue with the PROVEN MODEL of ‘Multi-racial Coalition’ of race-based parties, which has proven successful in maintaining PEACE, STABILITY and PROSPERITY in our great country for over 50 years.

Anwar Ibrahim should have benefitted from the experience of Datuk Onn. But, WISDOM is becoming a rare commodity among our politicians these days….
